Remembering Mary Ann

... Pat Binninger

I went to Cardinal Spellman with Mary Ann, Noreen, Brian Fletcher and Greg. I rode the 13 bus with her and the others almost every day for 4 years.

She was born on April, 1948 and attended grammar school at Holy Family on Castle Hill Avenue. She had at least 2 boyfriends, Johnny Miller and Stanley Dymek, before she met and married Jimmy Martin and had 3 lovely daughters. She also helped me get my first job at the Big Apple supermarket!

Mary Ann was a fun girl, always had a funny way of looking at life and was quick with a quip or joke. I had traveled to Montrose, NY, to see her probably 3 or 4 years before she died in 2010 At that time she had told me she was recovering from ovarian cancer, so I wanted to see her. When I arrived after picking up Rosie, she entertained us for lunch and we visited with her and her parents and kids. Jimmy came home from work to see us as well. She looked pretty well and we kept in touch via e-mail after that. Early in 2010. she told me her father had died. and I expressed my condolences. I remembered him well from those days in Castle Hill.

After that message. her e-mails slowed down and I attributed it to her having to care for her mother. who was living with her, and all of the other things that come up after a death in the family. I sent her a Christmas card that year and was completely shocked when Jimmy called me on Christmas Day to tell me that Mary Ann had passed away in October. I am guessing it was a recurrence of the cancer.

The only photo I had of her was one taken on our Senior Class trip to Washington. DC. She. Noreen and another classmate Peggy Martin. were in their pajamas and bras vamping for the camera. I sent it to Jimmy in the hope of giving him a fond memory.

Mary Ann had a lot of funny sayings. one of which I still remember ... "Will you look at the head on that !"

Mary Ann was always a class act. After one of my High School reunions. Spellman printed a directory of alumni. I opened it up. found a telephone number for Mary Ann and gave her a call. After some 35 years it was like talking to an old friend who hadn't missed a beat. We talked for a bit, caught up on our family situations, and she updated me about Rose. Just one great conversation that stuck with me for a long time. She was just a real classy lady.
